Lord Leverhulme and 16 Wood Street
Sometime during the Covid lockdown, a Civic Trust plaque indicating that 16 Wood Street was the birthplace of W. H. Lever (Lord Leverhulme) was stolen from the front of the building. Bolton Socialist Club and Bolton Socialist Halls, who own the building, have decided against replacing it, due largely to Lever's exploitative business operations in the Belgian Congo, which relied entirely on forced labour. The company was responsible for huge numbers of unnecessary deaths and heaped misery on the Congolese people in its areas of operation. Despite persistent attempts from some quarters to distance Lever from his company's appalling treatment of its workers , recent evidence based re-evaluations by, among others, the Port Sunlight Village Trust, have concluded that Lever was well aware of his company's practices. Below are the list of regular events that occur under normal circumstances unfortunately some have had to be put on hold until we feel it is safe to restart.
The club is open most Saturdays from 12-2.30pm and lunches are usually available - Good food in friendly company but come early to make sure you get some lunch.
The Clarion Choir meets at the club between 2pm to 4pm the first and third Saturday of the Month - come along even if you think you can't sing!
There is a music night starting at 8pm at least one night in the Month, check club news for details. You are welcome to play, sing, read a poem or to sit back and enjoy.
On other Friday nights there are Red Cinema and various Red Friday events e.g talks, discussions, concerts, parties...
A Touch of Class (Dir. Melvin Frank 1973)
A tribute to the wonderful Glenda Jackson, who died earlier this year, to kick off our autumn season. A sparkling romantic comedy which won its star an Oscar. Very funny and played with chic aplomb by Jackson and co-star George Segal.
