The Walt Whitman Walk & Bolton Whitman Fellowship
Walt Whitman the American poet (1819-1892) has a long association with Bolton. His supporters in the town were known as the Whitmanites.
To celebrate the poetry of Walt Whitman an annual walk with readings takes place as close as possible to his birthday, the 31st of May. Check the News page here for details of the next walk.
The Walk takes a different route each year but is a circular walk traditionally starting and finishing at Barrow Bridge but other routes have also been take on occasion.
The walk is punctuated by frequent stops to read Walt's Poetry and drink from a "Loving Cup". The Cup used is not the original, the original Cup is held by Bolton Museum. From 2009 we have used a Loving Cup commissioned from a local Artisan.
The Walk is a very informal affair with those walkers who wish to reading poems that they like or that others may have requested.
All are welcome, whether your interest is in the poetry of Walt Whitman or a walk with pleasant company and fellowship.
