Sensible Housing Co-operative was set up in the mid 1980s by a group of young people who had limited housing options. 16 run down terraced houses were acquired and refurbished and a small block of 12 flats was built, all in the Great Lever area. At the time there was 100% grant funding for social housing and many co-ops were set up during this period. Then grant funding was reduced and it was no longer financially viable for the group to continue to grow. However things are starting to change. Last year government announced the Community Led Housing Fund and Community Led Housing will be included in the Greater Manchester Housing Strategy. Is there an opportunity to do more in Bolton and if so who will make that happen? Julie Ralph from the Sensible Housing Co-op leads the discussion.
