2. Last Friday's Red Friday meeting, Russia, Ukraine, Energy and the West with Simon Pirani, was very well attended and highly informative. In the tradition of Socialist Club, views and ideas on this very complex issue were exchanged in a respectful and comradely fashion. A number of people asked for details of the bulletin Simon and a group of labour movement activists put together from what they consider to be reliable sources. A Very British Conspiracy - the story of the Campaign for Justice for the Shrewsbury 24
The book tells the full story of the state-led prosecution of striking building workers and the long running campaign to overturn this miscarriage of justice. It reveals how the state used the criminal justice system to secure convictions and how, in the absence of hard evidence, the police and prosecution went to extraordinary lengths to criminalise trade unionists.
Eileen Turnbull was the voluntary researcher for the campaign who uncovered the evidence that would get the pickets’ convictions overturned. The book explores the government and police documents that revealed the careful planning of the prosecution of the 24 strikers.
