Faces Places (Dir. Agnes Varda, JR, 2017)
An odd but evenly-matched couple go on the road all over France in a specially adapted van, which is like a mobile photo booth. They arrive in villages and towns and get locals to have their portrait pictures taken in the back of his vehicle, which are then printed out at gigantic size, sometimes doing a whole body shot printed out piecemeal. They are plastered on to the sides of buildings, matching the sections up with a wallpaperer’s skill. The results are utterly spectacular, and often unbearably moving.
Sheer perfection - that's the phrase that springs to mind when describing the humanist miracle that is Faces Places, the year's best and most beguiling documentary. Peter Travers, Rolling Stone

The Florida Project (Dir. Sean Baker 2017)
Warm, winning, and gloriously alive, Sean Baker’s The Florida Project is a deeply moving and unforgettably poignant look at childhood. Set on a stretch of highway just outside the imagined utopia of Disney World, The Florida Project follows six-year-old Moonee and her rebellious mother Halley over the course of a single summer.
‘..a sympathetic portrait of marginalised experience from a film-maker whose great triumph is that he never feels like a tourist. This is Moonee’s world, and for a couple of hours at least, we are privileged to live in it.’ Mark Kermode, The Guardian
