An illustrated talk with Freya Linder
Freya is a student whose work has explored the phenomena of Liberation Skirts, created in the Netherlands to celebrate Dutch Liberation Day on May 5th 1945. Invented by resistance fighter and feminist Mies Boissevain-van Lennep, the style has been described as a “feminist mode of political expression”, explicitly linking gender to national reconstruction in post war period. Inspired by this tradition Freya, working with Fabric of Protest, has created her own Covid Liberation skirt.
Summer of Soul tells the story of the Harlem Cultural Festival of 1969, the same year as Woodstock but largely forgotten until the release of this exhilarating documentary. Amazing performances from the likes of Stevie Wonder, Nina Simone, Gladys Knight, Mahalia Jackson, Sly and the Family Stone and BB King, but just as important is the commentary, contextualising this key moment in the Black Pride movement and the struggle for civil rights in the USA.
