Sarah Reddish is probably one of the most important figures in Bolton’s history, yet her work in improving the living and working conditions of working class families and her campaigning for women’s suffrage remains largely unacknowledged beyond academic research. Sarah worked tirelessly her whole life alongside women such as Eva Gore-Booth and Esther Roper, Selena Cooper and Sarah Dickinson. She was, among many other things, a trade unionist, a Radical Suffragist, a key member of the Co-operative Guild, a member of Clarion and of the ILP, a founder member of Bolton Socialist Club, the first woman to be elected to the Education Board in Bolton, a Poor Law Guardian and the founder of the first mother and baby clinic in Bolton.
A short presentation will be followed by an open discussion of the importance of Sarah's life and work.

Every year Bolton Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament organises a half hour vigil in connection with Hiroshima Day on the nearest Saturday to August 6th. This year it will be on Saturday, August 7 from 12-12.30 in front of the war memorial in Victoria Square. We hope that as many members of the Socialist Club as possible will join us. |
